Academic Lecture: Michael K. Silber will deliver the Morris, Ida and Alan Heilig Lectureship in Jewish Studies, titled:
In Your Face explores the meanings and the misinterpretations associated with the beard and the shaven face in Jewish society. The eighteenth century is its focus, when most of European adult males were clean shaven, and the Jewish male visage could be read to indicate tradition and identity, acculturation and secularization. The lecture begins with a specific incident, an in your face provocation in Amsterdam in 1778 and then reveals its true causes and widens to encompass a worldwide controversy caused by a scandal in Bohemia that in many ways inadvertently sparked the beginnings of Jewish secularization. Professor Silber is on the faculty at Hebrew University and this year is a visiting faculty member at Yale.
We regret that we must cancel the lecture with Peter Schäfer that was previously scheduled for March 24th.
