Lunch Seminar: Evolving Perspectives on Music During the Rabbinic Period

January 15 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

RESCHEDULED FOR: January 15, 2025

Lunch Seminar for graduate students and faculty members with Rabbi Solomon Hoffman

Evolving Perspectives on Music During the Rabbinic Period

The Rabbinic period is often associated with restrictions placed on the use of music due to mourning for the destruction of a Jerusalem temple. An exploration of how the Mishnah and Talmud speak about music reveals a spectrum of perspectives on music, even when discussing limitations. Rabbi Solomon Hoffman of Kehillah Synagogue will share an analysis of these texts that examines how these views developed over the course of the Rabbinic period, and questions their relevance for conversations about ritual use of music today.

 RSVP is required.
