Jewish Women Who Chose Abortion during the Holocaust
“A Matter of Life and Death: Jewish Women Who Chose Abortion during the Holocaust” chronicles the reproductive health decisions made by Jewish women during the Holocaust in order to survive based on their previous knowledge of health care options available to them before the German occupation. Presented here is a case study of Warsaw to illustrate how reproductive health care and specifically abortion show the intersection of race, class, and gender amidst genocide.
Morgan Morales received her BA in History from the University of California, Irvine in 2014. She received MAs from Indiana University, Bloomington in History and Jewish Studies. At Indiana her research focused on modern Jewish history, gender, and the Holocaust. Her current work focuses on Jewish women who chose abortions as a survival strategy during the Holocaust. She has presented her work at numerous conferences. In 2023-24, she holds a Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies.
