Class Visit: Ronny Someck

Poet Ronny Someck will be a special guest visitor for Prof. Yaron Shemer’s students that are enrolled in JWST 357 [The Arab-Jews: Culture, Community, and Coexistence] or in his grad seminar. The class is open to the public, and will explore different poems than what is featured in the Oct 24 evening lecture.

 

The public and campus community are welcome to join this special class visit on Tuesday, October 25th, 3:30 to 4:45pm, Graham Memorial, main lounge. Visitor parking options include the Morehead Planetarium lot, meters on Franklin Street, and surface lots on Rosemary Street. Free and open to the public. Campus map/parking.

 

RONNY SOMECK was born in Baghdad in 1951 and came to Israel as a young child. He has published 13 volumes of poetry (The last called “so much god”) and two books for children with Shirly Someck. He has been translated into 44 languages, including Arabic, French, Catalan, Albanian, Italian, Macedonian, Yiddish, Croatian, Nepali, Dutch, Danish, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Turkish, Russian, and English.

Someck’s book “the milk underground” (White Pine Press) was awarded the Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation in 2015. He is the recipient of the “Wine Poem Award” in Struga Poetry Evenings, Macedonia, in 2005 and the Hans Berghuis Prize for poetry in 2006, Holland. He has been awarded the Cross of The Order of The Knights of Poland and the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France.
