Co-sponsoring: Hospitality in Times of War

April 11 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

The Center is pleased to co-sponsor this event hosted by the Department of Classics:

April 11, 5:30pm, Murphey Hall 104.

Hospitality in Times of War

The starting point of the talk is a photo taken on October 23, 2023, capturing a unique moment during the process of handing over an Israeli hostage to Red Cross representatives. In the photo, the 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz, who was abducted by the Hamas from Kibbutz Nir Oz during the October 7 massacre, is seen as she turns back to shake hands with her captor. Considering the various conflicting responses to the photo in the media, the talk discusses the significance of Ms. Lifshitz’s gesture through a cultural history of the handshake in Greco-Roman antiquity with particular attention to the Homeric discourse of hospitality and its modern philosophical reception.
