Dr. Joel Baden of Yale University will be speaking at UNC as part of the Religious Studies Department’s McLester Colloquium. Dr. Baden’s talk will draw on research for his latest book, “Bible Nation: the United States of Hobby Lobby”. The lecture, which is targeted to faculty and graduate students, will focus on the rise of the millionaires behind Hobby Lobby (the huge nationwide chain of craft stores) and their acquisition of an unparalleled collection of biblical antiquities for their Museum of the Bible in Washington DC, their creation of a closely controlled group of scholars to study and promote their collection, and their efforts to place a Bible curriculum in public schools.

There is also a Reading Group event on Tuesday evening, 8-10 pm in the Queen Anne Lounge in Campus Y. We will be reading a pre-circulated paper on Deuteronomy and discuss with with Prof Baden. All are welcome to this too. If people want to join for the reading group, they can contact Tine Rassalle, graduate student (tinerassalle@hotmail.com).
